1 Rajya Sabha passes Family Courts (Amendment) Bill 2022 with a voice vote

Parliament has passed the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill 2022 with the Rajya Sabha approving it today amid din. The Lok Sabha has already cleared the Bill. 

It seeks to amend the Family Courts Act, 1984. The Act allows state governments to establish Family Courts. The central government is empowered to notify dates for the Act to come into force in different states. The governments of Himachal Pradesh and Nagaland have set up Family Courts in their states under the Act. However, the central government has not extended the application of the Act to these states.

The Bill seeks to extend the application of the Act to the state of Himachal Pradesh with effect from 15th February 2019 and to the state of Nagaland with effect from 12 September 2008.  The establishment of Family Courts in both states will be retrospectively valid from these dates.

2 CUET-UG exam rescheduled; Postponed at a few centres across 17 States following technical and administrative reasons

The National Testing Agency NTA has said that the Common University Entrance Test CUET-UG scheduled today was postponed at a few centres across 17 states due to administrative and technical reasons.

The NTA in a statement said, the test (first shift)will be held on the 12th of this month for a few examination Centres. The centres are Namsai and Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh, Nalbari in Assam, Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh, New Delhi, Ambala in Haryana, Bokaro, Giridih, Jamshedpur and Ramgarh in Jharkhand, Leh in Union Territory of Ladakh, Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, Aurangabad, Raigad, Satara and Wardha in Maharashtra, Koraput in Odisha, Karaikal in Puducherry, Jodhpur in Rajasthan, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Tiruvarur, Viluppuram and Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, Agartala in Tripura, Noida and Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Pauri-Garhwal in Uttarakhand and Hooghly in West Bengal.

3 DRDO successfully test fires indigenously developed laser-guided ATGMs

The indigenously developed Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missiles ATGM were successfully test-fired from Main Battle Tank MBT Arjun by Defence Research and Development Organisation DRDO and Indian Army at KK Ranges with support of Armoured Corps Centre and School Ahmednagar in Maharashtra today. The missiles hit with precision and successfully destroyed the targets at two different ranges. Telemetry systems have recorded the satisfactory flight performance of the missiles.

The all-indigenous Laser Guided ATGM employs a tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank HEAT warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour ERA protected armoured vehicles. The ATGM has been developed with multi-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from the 120 mm rifled gun of MBT Arjun.

5 ISRO to launch its smallest rocket to unfurl Tricolour in Space on Sunday

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will launch its smallest commercial rocket on Sunday to unfurl Tricolour in space. The launch will take place from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 9:18 am. ISRO chairman S Somanath has called the new satellite a “game changer” that will drive India’s dreams of breaking into the lucrative and booming small satellite launch market.

On August 15, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an announcement that the Tricolour will be unfurled in space during India’s 75th year of Independence.

6 Two more gold medals for India on day five of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

India picked up two more gold medals on day five of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG), including a historic gold in Lawn Bowls and the men’s Table Tennis team who successfully defended their title. Vikas Thakur also picked up a silver in the men’s 96kg weightlifting, the eighth medal in the sport, as India held on to sixth place in the medals tally with five gold, four silver and three bronze medals in their kitty thus far.

Lovely Choubey, Pinki Singh, Nayanmoni Saikia and Rupa Rani Tirkey struck gold, India’s fourth of the Games, in the Women’s Fours Lawn Bowls competition beating South Africa 17-10 in the gold medal match. It was not only the first ever gold, but also the first ever medal for India in the sport.

7 Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurates 4th ONGC Para Games in Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today inaugurated the fourth ONGC Para Games in Thyagaraj Sports Complex in New Delhi. On the occasion Mr. Puri said, the ONGC Para Games is a wonderful platform to bring in inclusiveness and equity in the human resource of the public enterprises under the Ministry.

Beginning from today the fourth ONGC Para Games is being organized by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) by the 4th of this month. Nearly 275 Persons with Disabilities (PwD) are participating in the Games. These all are employees of eight central oil and gas public enterprises.

8 Lok Sabha passes Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021

The Lok Sabha today passed the Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021, seeking to increase the species protected under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, and implement the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES.

Replying to the discussion in Lok Sabha, Environment and Forests Minister Bhupender Yadav said that the unique ecosystem in the country must be preserved. He said, the Government has given equal importance to the development and environment. The Minister said, in the last eight years protected areas in the country have increased from 693 to 987, which includes fifty two tiger reserves.

9 4th edition of India-Oman joint military Exercise underway in Rajasthan

Fourth Edition of India-Oman joint military Exercise Ex Al Najah -IV is underway at Mahajan Field Firing Range in Suratgarh, Rajasthan.

Exercise scheduled from 1 to 13 August is aimed at enhancing cooperation and inter-operability of two militaries. The joint exercise will focus on Counter Terrorism Operations, Regional Security Operations and Peace Keeping Operations under United Nations charter apart from organising joint physical training schedules, tactical drills, techniques and procedures.

10 Nitin Gadkari inaugurates and lays foundation stone for six National Highway projects in Madhya Pradesh

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Shri Nitin Gadkari today inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 6 National Highway projects of 119 KMs worth 2300 Crore rupees in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Speaking on the occasion Shri Gadkari informed that the projects being launched for better connectivity in Indore will make the path of progress easier in the State.
