1 Delhi University to introduce Centre for Hindu Studies from 2023-24 session

The University of Delhi has announced to launch the Centre for Hindu Studies (CHS) from 2023-24 academic session. The centre will focus on various facets of the Hindu civilisation, its multiple dynamics, history, philosophy and worldview.

Under the new centre, DU will initially introduce a postgraduate (PG) programme in Hindu Studies for the 2023-24 academic session, an official said. This course aims to involve all the stakeholders, including the enrolled students of the programme, to "think critically and evolve a Bharat-centric perspective beyond theoretical explanation", he added.

2 MRF becomes the first Indian stock to touch ?1 lakh per share mark

MRF became the first Indian stock to touch the rupee one lakh per share mark on Tuesday (June 13). The stock opened at ₹99,500 on BSE against the previous close of ₹98,939.70 and touched an all-time high of ₹1,00,300 in morning trade.

The stock has witnessed strong gains in the last one year. It is up 45 per cent in the last one year against a 19 per cent gain in the benchmark Sensex. MRF shares hit their 52-week low of ₹65,900.05 on BSE on June 17, 2022. As of the closing of the previous session, the stock is up 50 per cent from that level.

3 CPI inflation drops to 4.25% in May, lowest in 25 months

India's headline retail inflation rate dropped for the fourth month in a row in May, falling to 4.25 percent from 4.70 percent in April, according to data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on June 12.

At 4.25 percent, Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation for May is the lowest in 25 months and is below consensus estimates of 4.4 percent.

Despite the huge 227-basis-point fall since January, CPI inflation remains above the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) medium-term target of 4 percent for the 44th month in a row.

4 Undersea rail tunnel set to be built in Thane Creek

India's first 7-km-long undersea rail tunnel is set to be constructed in Thane Creek as the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) signed a contract with Afcons Infrastructure Limited, commencing the work process.

"The construction of a 21-km tunnel is one of the most challenging contracts of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor. It includes building the country's first twin-track undersea rail tunnel, measuring 7 km, at Thane Creek. Three tunnel boring machines and the new Austrian tunnelling method will be utilised for this tunnel's construction," stated Rajendra Prasad, managing director of NHSRCL.

5 INS Vikramaditya, Vikrant lead Navy’s mega ops in Arabian Sea

The Navy carried out a massive Carrier Battle Group (CBG) operation involving more than 35 aircraft in the Arabian Sea on Saturday, one of the biggest demonstrations of its operational capabilities in recent years amid increasing Chinese forays in the Indian Ocean.

A CBG is a naval fleet comprising an aircraft carrier and its multiple escort vessels.

Saturday’s exercise was a twin CBG operation involving both of India’s aircraft carriers — INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant — along with a diverse fleet of escort ships, submarines and aircraft.

6 Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar finishes third in Diamond League

Top Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar secured a creditable third place in the Paris Diamond League with a jump of 8.09m, his maiden top-three finish in the prestigious one-day meeting series.

Sreeshankar also became the only third Indian to finish in top-three of a Diamond League after Olympic champion javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and former discus thrower Vikas Gowda.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Sreeshankar achieved his best jump of the day in his third attempt on Friday night.

A new NASA-funded study provides a deeper understanding of space affects the human brain. Researchers said that astronauts who travelled on the International Space Station (ISS) or NASA space shuttles on missions lasting at least six months experienced significant expansion of the cerebral ventricles - spaces in the middle of the brain containing cerebrospinal fluid. This colourless and watery fluid flows in and around the brain and spinal cord. It cushions the brain to help protect against sudden impact and removes waste products. Based on brain scans of 30 astronauts, the researchers found that it took three years for the ventricles to fully recover after such journeys.

9 Kerala-cadre IPS officer Nitin Agarwal appointed BSF DG

10 Punjab National Bank (PNB) launches IVR-based UPI 123PAY

Punjab National Bank (PNB) becomes the first public sector bank to introduce an IVR-based UPI solution - UPI 123PAY, aligning with the Digital Payment Vision 2025 towards a cashless and cardless society.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a 24-hour payment channel enabling customers to perform fast, encrypted and real-time payments. Till now, the solution was accessible only through smartphones or through Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) service and was dependent on good internet connectivity. The UPI 123PAY solution would extend the functionality and facilitate the feature to any phone users and those in low internet connectivity zones to perform UPI transactions.
