ITC’s board reappoints Sanjiv Puri as CMD
The Board of Directors of ITC has recommended reappointment of Sanjiv Puri as the Chairman and Managing Director of the company for a period of five years effective July 22, 2024. His present term will end on July 21, 2024.
“The board, on the recommendation of the committee, has also recommended for the approval of the members, re-appointment of Puri as a Director, not liable to retire by rotation, and as the Managing Director & Chairman of the company for a period of five years with effect from 22nd July, 2024,” the company said in its annual report (2023) released on Tuesday.

Lakshya Sen wins Canada Open
Lakshya Sen saved four game points in the second after taking the first to claim the Canada Open Super 500 at Calgary on Sunday. The six straight points he scored to win the championship showed the mental stranglehold he held over Chinese Li Shifeng throughout the game to win 21-18, 22-20 in 50 minutes.
Adding extra acceleration onto his flat drives, pouncing on every short lift and playing some ridiculously tight shots at the net, Sen went on to win his second Super 500 title of his career after the India Open, beating the reigning All England champion.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurates HAL regional office in Kuala Lumpur
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) regional office in Kuala Lumpur today. The Defence Ministry said this regional office will boost the defence industrial collaboration between India and Malaysia and serve as a hub for the HAL’s engagement with the South-East Asian region.
During the last day of his official visit, Mr. Singh interacted with the Indian diaspora and urged them to work incessantly for shared prosperity underlining the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. He said, Malaysia is home to the second largest members of the Persons of Indian Origin and has a significant presence of the NRI community. In a separate event, Mr. Singh interacted with the members of the diverse and vibrant Indian community in Malaysia. He appreciated their deep-rooted and close connection with India. The Minister highlighted that the country’s prestige and stature on the global stage have increased under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
GST Council: 28% tax on online gaming, casinos and horse-racing
THE GOODS and Services Tax (GST) Council, in its 50th meeting on Tuesday, decided to levy a uniform 28 per cent tax on full face value for online gaming, casinos and horse-racing, while reducing the rate for uncooked/ unfried snack pellets, cancer medicine and imitation zari thread.
The meeting also clarified the rate for food and beverages sold inside multiplexes and the definition of all utility vehicles to bring parity for cess levy.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the intent was not to end any industry linked to online gaming, casinos and horse-racing, but there was discussion on the moral question of whether these should be taxed at the same rate as essential items.
Sikkim tops northeast, UP among bigger states in grievance redressal
Sikkim has topped the northeastern states in addressing public complaints, followed by Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, the Centre said on Tuesday.
The ranking was made in the Centralised Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System (CPGRAMS) monthly report, released by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) under the Personnel Ministry, for states for June 2023.

Today’s Google Doodle celebrates one of India’s premiere street food pani puri. For Indians, pani puri needs no introduction. It is a street food made of a crispy shell stuffed with potatoes, chickpeas, spices, or chillies and is served with flavoured waters. On this day in 2015, a restaurant in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, achieved the World Record for serving the most flavours of pani puri by offering 51 options!
This street snack goes by different names, as there are many regional variations that exist across India. In Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the name pani puri describes the bite-sized street food commonly filled with boiled chickpeas, a white pea mixture, and sprouts dipped in tangy and spicy pani.
ORF President Samir Saran to join East-West Center's Board of Governors
The East-West Center's Board of Governors has elected Dr Samir Saran, head of India's leading think tank, as one of the board's five international members.
Dr Saran, who is President of the New Delhi-based Observer Research Foundation (ORF), will begin his term at the board's next semiannual meeting in October, a EWC release said.
Wanindu Hasaranga, Ashleigh Gardner Win ICC 'Player Of The Month' Award
Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and Australia women's team all-rounder Ashleigh Garner won ICC's top monthly honours after they were named 'Player of the Month' for June.
Hasaranga recently featured in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers for Sri Lanka, contributing heavily in his team's qualification for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India starting September 5.
Ashleigh Gardner, on the other hand, became the first player to win the accolade thrice since its introduction.
Tamil Nadu gets first flight training organization
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation on Tuesday approved Tamil Nadu’s first Flight Training Organisation (FTO).
A senior Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) official informed that EKVI Air Training Organisation Pvt. Ltd. based at Salem Airport in Tamil Nadu got the approval to establish FTO.
"This is the only Flying Training Organization in the entire state of Tamil Nadu", said the official.
