Government to replace Wholesale Price Index with Producer Price Index system

The government has decided to gradually phase out the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) and replace it with a comprehensive Producer Price Index (PPI) system. The decision was taken to modernise country’s inflation and pricing data framework and align it with global best practices.

The Commerce and Industry Ministry has said that the government has approved the revision of the base year of the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) from 2011-12 to 2022-23. Considering the wide usage of WPI in price escalation clauses, this index will be released for five years from the date of release of the revised series along with PPI and will be discontinued thereafter.

The Ministry said that this will give sufficient time to users to switch from WPI to PPI. The revised Wholesale Price Index and New Producer Price Indices is scheduled to be released on 15th of this month. The Ministry added that the number of items covered under the new series of WPI has increased from 697 to 957, providing broader representation of economic activity.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope Detects Methane On Interstellar Comet For First Time, Reveals Unusual Chemistry

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has collected its first mid-infrared chemical fingerprint of an interstellar object during a recent revisit to comet 3I/ATLAS. The findings were recently published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The observations were carried out using Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on two separate dates as the comet traveled back out of the solar system after passing around the Sun. The first observation took place from December 15 to 16, when the comet was about 205 million miles (329 million kilometres) from the Sun. A second observation followed on December 27, when the comet was about 236 million miles (379 million kilometres) from the Sun, reported NASA.

For the first time on an interstellar visitor, Webb directly detected methane gas. Scientists said methane is highly volatile and easily changes from solid ice into gas. Its delayed appearance in comet 3I/ATLAS suggests that it was buried beneath the comet's surface layer and remained protected from sublimation until heat from the comet's close approach to the Sun reached deeper icy regions. Researchers also found that the amount of methane relative to water was surprisingly high, with very few similar examples known in our solar system.

India’s seafood exports hit record 8.46 billion dollars, shrimp powers the surge

India’s seafood exports have sailed into uncharted waters, touching an all-time high of $8.46 billion (around Rs 72,000 crore) in 2025-26, driven largely by the global appetite for Indian shrimp.

The country exported 19.72 lakh tonnes of marine products, the highest ever, despite facing multiple challenges in international markets. The performance marks a strong rebound for the sector, with exports growing 16.13% in volume and 13.44% in dollar terms over the previous year.

The real star of the export basket continues to be frozen shrimp, which contributed nearly two-thirds of India’s seafood export earnings. Every second container of Indian seafood heading overseas appears to carry shrimp, underlining its dominance in the sector.
