Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to students and youth of the country to work for making an Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Speaking at the 54th Convocation Ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur yesterday, the Prime Minister urged students to have dreams, turn them into resolutions and achieve them. He said in the last seven years, his government has taken several steps to achieve the goal of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the students of IIT can play an important role in it.
 
During his visit to Kanpur Mr Modi also inaugurated the completed section of the Metro Rail Project in the city. This section is nine-kilometre long from IIT, Kanpur to Moti Jheel. The Prime Minister inspected the Kanpur Metro Rail Project and undertook a metro ride from IIT Metro Station to Geeta Nagar. The Prime Minister said, the double engine government of Uttar Pradesh yesterday is trying to make up for the loss of time in the past and it is working at double speed.

The entire length of the Metro Rail Project in Kanpur is 32 kilometres and is being built at a cost of over 11,000 crore rupees.

President Ram Nath Kovind has expressed sadness at the passing away of Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Mahendra Prasad. In a tweet, the President said he had parliamentary experience of nearly four decades, and was also among pioneers of pharmaceutical industry.

The registrations for the same will begin today and will go on till January 20. Mr Modi announced the plans for the next Pariksha Pe Charcha in his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on Sunday.

The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Bina-Panki Multiproduct Pipeline Project. Extending from Bina refinery in Madhya Pradesh to Panki in Kanpur, the 356 KM long project has a capacity of around 3.45 million metric tonne per annum. The project has been built at a cost of over 1500 crore rupees.

Prior to this, the Prime Minister will be the Chief Guest of the 54th Convocation of IIT Kanpur. During the convocation, all the students will be issued digital degrees through an in-house blockchain-driven technology developed at the Institute under the National Blockchain Project.

These digital degrees can be verified globally and are unforgeable.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who helped end apartheid in South Africa, has died aged 90. A contemporary of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, he was was one of the driving forces behind the movement to end the policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the white minority government against the black majority in South Africa from 1948 until 1991.

The outspoken Tutu was considered the nation's conscience by both, the black majority and the white minority, an enduring testament to his faith and spirit of reconciliation in a divided nation. He was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984 for his role in the struggle to abolish the apartheid system.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mandi in Himachal Pradesh today. He will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of hydropower projects worth over 11 thousand crore rupees around 12 noon. Prior to the event, Mr. Modi will preside over the second ground breaking ceremony of Himachal Pradesh Global Investors’ Meet around 11:30 AM.

Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of Renuka Ji Dam project. Pending for about three decades, the project was made possible through the vision of cooperative federalism of the Prime Minister, when six states - Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Delhi were brought together by the Centre for making the project possible. The 40 MW project will be built at a cost of around 7,000 crore rupees. It will prove to be immensely beneficial for Delhi, which will be able to receive around 500 million cubic metre water supply per year.

Mr. Modi will lay the foundation stone of the Luhri Stage 1 Hydro Power Project. The 210 MW project will be built at a cost of over 1800 crore rupees. It will lead to the generation of over 750 million units of electricity per year. The modern and dependable grid support will prove beneficial to surrounding states of the region as well.
