2 GE Aerospace signs pact with HAL to manufacture fighter jet engines for IAF

In a landmark deal that gives a massive boost to ties between the US and India, General Electric (GE) Aerospace signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Thursday to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force.

The announcement of the pact came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s State visit to US.

4 UNDP and DAY-NULM to jointly empower women entrepreneurs

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) on Wednesday joined hands to empower women and provide them with better career opportunities in the realm of entrepreneurship.

“The partnership will provide support for women looking to start and expanding their own enterprises, particularly in sectors such as care economy, digital economy, electric mobility, waste management, food packaging and more. Focused on fostering entrepreneurship development and accelerating enterprise growth, the three-year project, extendable beyond 2025, will cover eight cities in the initial phase," the ministry of housing & urban affairs said.

5 Retail Inflation For Farm, Rural Workers Eases In May

Retail inflation for farm workers and rural labourers eased to 5.99 per cent and 5.84 per cent, respectively, in May.

Point-to-point rate of inflation based on the CPI-AL (consumer price index-agricultural labourers and CPI-RL (rural labourers) stood at 6.50 per cent and 6.52 per cent respectively in April 2023 and 6.67 per cent and 7.00 per cent respectively during the corresponding month (May 2022) of the previous year, a labour bureau statement said.

In order to foster competitiveness among mines and recognize their outstanding performance based on compliance of statutory provisions, adoption of advanced mining technology and economic achievements, the Ministry of Coal announces the commencement of Star Rating Registration process of Coal and Lignite Mines for the financial year 2022-23.

The Star Rating policy aims to evaluate mines based on various factors across seven key parameters namely, Mining Operations, Environment-related parameters, Adoption of Technologies, Best Mining Practices, Economic performance, Rehabilitation & Resettlement, Worker-related Compliance and Safety & security.

7 MoD inks pact with private players for jobs for ex-servicemen

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) appears to be pushing peddle, with Directorate General of Resettlement (DGR) signing two MoUs with private industry in less than a fortnight to generate employment for ex-servicemen.

The DGR, which comes under Department of Ex-servicemen Welfare of MoD, signed an MoU with Adecco India Private Ltd on Wednesday as it explores job opportunities for its ex-personnel whose numbers are set to multiply in future due to contractual employment of constabulory under the Agnipath scheme.

8 Arundhati Roy wins 45th European Essay Prize for 'Azadi'

Writer and activist Arundhati Roy has been awarded the 45th European Essay Prize for lifetime achievement on the occasion of the French translation of her latest essay, 'Azadi'. The French translation 'Liberte, fascisme, fiction' appeared in Gallimard, a leading French publishing group.

"The jury of the Prix European de I'Essai wishes to highlight an enriching work in terms of reflection on the construction of the world and the relationship with language. Arundhati Roy uses the essay as a form of combat, analysing fascism and the way it is being structured. This is an issue that is increasingly occupying our lives. Her essays offer shelter to a multitude of people. In awarding the prize for her literary work, the jury is also acknowledging the author's commitment to political action," said a release here.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Yoga celebration at the UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday created a Guinness World Record for the participation of people of most nationalities.

PM Modi, who is in New York on the first leg of his maiden state visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, led a historic event at the UN Headquarters to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga, attended by top UN officials, diplomats and prominent personalities.

The Yoga celebration led by Prime Minister Modi at the UN headquarters created the Guinness World Record for participation of people of most nationalities, officials said.
