1 IIT Kanpur establishes a Center of Excellence for monitoring air quality

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) established a Center of Excellence (CoE) named ATMAN (Advanced Technologies for Monitoring Air-quality iNdicators).

According to a press release by IITK, the CoE is a step towards the Atma Nirbhar Bharat initiative, focusing on building indigenous low-cost sensor manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence (AI)/Machine Learning (ML) capabilities to enhance air quality across urban and rural areas of the country. It aims to translate sustainable technologies and business models into practical products and services accessible to millions globally. It also aims to address critical air quality challenges with cutting-edge technology.

2 IIT Madras opens its first international campus in Zanzibar

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras Zanzibar will have 50 percent Indian students and the rest from various African countries, Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras announced during the virtual inauguration of the campus on November 6 making it the first IIT in India to establish an international campus.

With faculties recruited across the world, Kamakoti said the campus will cater to around 45 students with a majority (around 30) of them enrolling in the undergraduate (UG) programmes. Admissions will be done via an entrance exam and interview.

"The campus has started in its first semester with students from different countries including Zanzibar, India, Nepal and Tanzania Mainland. A total of 45 students have been admitted for a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Data Science and AI and a two-year Master of Technology degree in Data Science and AI," Kamakoti said.

4 Eighth edition of ‘Vizag Navy Marathon’ receives an overwhelming response in Visakhapatnam city

The eighth edition of ‘Vizag Navy Marathon’ received an overwhelming response in Visakhapatnam city. Around 12,000 people took part in the Marathon organised by the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) at RK Beach Road in the city yesterday. The event witnessed overwhelming participation from children, youth, senior citizens, and naval personnel from all over India and abroad in various categories. In addition to participants, a large number of citizens, students and volunteers, lined up from 4 am, cheering runners all along the scenic beach route. The marathon was flagged off by Vice Adm Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, ENC with more than 500 participants.

The half-marathon was flagged off by Vice Admiral G Srinivasan, DGNP Vizag, with more than 1,600 runners, and the 10-km run, with more than 2,700 runners, was flagged off by Dr Ravishankar Commissioner of Police. The 5-km run recorded a participation of over 7,000 runners and was flagged off by Vice Adm Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff, ENC.

5 Australia-India Education and Skill Council holds inaugural meeting at IIT Gandhinagar

The inaugural meeting of the Australia-India Education and Skill Council (AIESC) is scheduled to take place on November 6 at the esteemed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar. Formerly known as the Australian India Education Council (AIEC), AIESC was established in 2011 as a bilateral entity to facilitate educational, training, and research collaborations between Australia and India.

Dharmendra Pradhan, India's Minister of Education, and Jason Clare, Australia's Minister for Education, along with Brendan O'Connor, Australia's Minister for Skills and Training, will co-chair this meeting.

The council's primary objective has been broadened to align with the national priorities of both countries, with a new emphasis on promoting internationalization, two-way mobility, and collaboration in education and skill development. This gathering marks the first occasion where education and skill development are being addressed within the same institutional framework. The visit is expected to catalyze cooperation, participation, and synergy in vital areas of mutual interest in the fields of education and skill development.

6 Shanti Bhushan, former Law Minister and backer of ‘Basic Structure’, dies

Former Law Minister and senior advocate Shanti Bhushan passed away on Tuesday. He was 97.

He always stood for truth both as a Law Minister in the Morarji Desai Cabinet between 1977 and 1979 and as a senior advocate who fought alongside his son and noted civil rights lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, for judicial accountability and transparency.

In his memoir ‘Courting Destiny’, Mr. Bhushan quotes the cricketing legend Don Bradman to say that one can successfully combine the values of dignity, integrity, courage and modesty with pride, ambition and competitiveness.

7 7th Edition of Ganga Utsav Celebrated With Festive Fervor

The 7th edition of Ganga Utsav was organized today by National Mission for Clean Ganga in New Delhi and was inaugurated by Secretary, Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, in the presence of Special Secretary and Director General, NMCG, Shri G. Asok Kumar. The event also marked the release of 33rd edition of Namami Gange Magazine, the new Chacha Chaudhary series and the Voyage of Ganga Booklet, based on Ganga Pustak Parikrama in collaboration with NBT. The 2nd edition of Ganga Pustak Parikrama was also flagged off today by Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, and Mr. G. Asok Kumar. Ganga Pustak Parikrama will commence its 3-month long journey from Gangotri on 7 November 2023 and pass through all cities and towns on the banks of River Ganga – Uttarkashi, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Bijnor, Meerut, Aligarh, Farrukhabad, Kanpur, Prayagraj, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Chhapra, Patna, Begusarai, Sultanganj, Bhagalpur, Sahibganj, Baharampur, Kolkata, and Haldia – before ending its journey at Gangasagar on 11 January 2024.

8 In a first, crest of Navy warship 'Surat' to be unveiled in city it is named after

The crest of Indian Navy's latest warship 'Surat' will be unveiled by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in the presence of the Chief of Naval Staff Admiral R Hari Kumar and other senior officers on Monday. This is the first warship to be named after a city of Gujarat and this is also the first time the unveiling of the crest of a warship is being undertaken in the very city after which it has been named, a Press Information Bureau release said on Sunday

The ceremony to unveil the crest will be held in Surat, with Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Western Naval Command and Rear Admiral Anil Jaggi, Flag Officer Commanding Gujarat Naval Area in attendance, the release informed.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had launched this indigenously constructed ship, which is a guided missile destroyer, in March last year at Mumbai.
