G20 workshop on One Health-Opportunities & Challenges begins in Bengaluru

Union minister of state for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Shobha Karandlaje inaugurated G20 One Health workshop in Bengaluru today. The three-day workshop on One Health-Opportunities and Challenges is attended by delegates from G20 member countries and invited countries. Addressing the delegates, Shobha Karandlaje said that the theme of India's G20 Presidency is One Earth, One Family and One Future and going by the theme a workshop on One Health derives importance.

She noted that during Covid pandemic India helped other countries to mitigate the crisis. This collaboration between countries should trickle down to researchers, academicians and professionals for a sustainable support mechanism in the Health sector. She urged the delegates to work out a common platform for a communication interface to evolve a harmonious system to share knowledge, experience and resources. She said policy initiatives are needed for inclusive economic growth.



Union Minister Nitin Gadkari launches world's first 100% Ethanol-fueled car in New Delhi

In a major move towards reducing carbon dioxide emission and improving fuel efficiency in vehicles, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari today launched the world's first 100 percent Ethanol-fueled car in New Delhi.

Mr. Gadkari termed this day as historic saying that the world's first BS-VI (Stage-II), electrified flex-fuel vehicle has been launched which can function fully on ethanol-based fuel. Raising concern over the pollution emitted by vehicles, the Minister said, the country needs to undertake more sustainable and stringent measures to curb pollution. He stressed that the country has to reduce its dependence on oil imports in order to become self-reliant. Highlighting the importance of ethanol blended fuel, he said, country’s agriculture sector will witness growth with the adoption of this move and it will generate lots of job opportunities.

Geetika Srivastava is first woman to head Indian mission in Pakistan

For the first time since Independence, India’s head of mission in Pakistan will be a woman.

Geetika Srivastava, a 2005 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, will be the new Charge d’Affaires (CDA) in Islamabad. She will succeed Dr M Suresh Kumar who is likely to return to New Delhi.

While the two countries currently have a downgraded status of diplomatic representation in each other’s Capital — there are no High Commissioners, and the highest ranking diplomat is a CDA who is a Joint Secretary-rank equivalent officer — the government has selected a woman IFS officer to lead its High Commission in Pakistan.



Lt Gen Dhillon is IIT-Mandi BoG Chairperson

Lt Gen Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon (Retd) was appointed as the Chairperson of the Board of Governors (BoG) of Indian Institute of Technology, Mandi, on Friday, for a period of three years. Dhillon will succeed Professor Prem Vrat, the founding director of IIT Roorkee, in the position.

Dhillon retired from the defence services in January, 2023. He served as DG Defence Intelligence Agency and Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff under the Chief of Defence Staff responsible for international military cooperation and strategic intelligence.

Poet-writer Jayanta Mahapatra dies at 95

Eminent littérateur and poet Jayanta Mahapatra passed away on Sunday late evening at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. He was 95.

Mahapatra was admitted to the said hospital on August 4 due to old-age related complications. He was shifted to the ICU after his condition deteriorated.

Mahapatra was the first Indian poet to win a Sahitya Akademi award for English poetry. He was also conferred with the Padma Shri award in 2009. However, he returned it in 2015 to protest against “rising intolerance in India”.



ISRO sets Sept 2 as tentative date for launch of Aditya-L1 solar mission

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has set September 2 as the tentative date for the launch of its new ambitious solar mission, Aditya-L1 which will help in studying the sun and is planned to be placed in a halo orbit around the L1 of the Sun-Earth system, said an ISRO official.

"Most likely the launch will take place on September 2," an ISRO official said.
