World Championships: Parul Chaudhary qualifies for Paris Olympics
India's Parul Chaudhary finished 11th in the final of the 3000m steeplechase on Sunday, 27 August in Budapest. Parul finished her race with a national record-breaking run of 9:15:31 to attain qualification for the Paris Olympics, set to be held in 2024.
Parul Chaudhary had already made history by reaching the final of the World Athletics Championships 2023 in women's 3000m steeplechase, but her run - almost 10 seconds quicker than her qualification timings. She competed in the finals on Sunday, 27 August in Budapest with the world's best athletes.
Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra becomes first Indian to win Gold medal at World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra won India's first-ever gold at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary last night. In the men's javelin final, Neeraj Chopra wins Gold medal with a throw of 88.17 metres. Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem clinched Silver with a throw of 87.82 metres. Czech player Jakub vadlejchgot bronze Kishore Jena finished 5th and DP Manu at 6th in the javelin throw event.
In the women's 3000-metre steeplechase event, India's Parul Choudhary has finished 11th, but, clocked her personal best, qualified for Paris Olympics 2024. She clocked 9:15:31 in the women’s 3000m steeplechase finals. With this performance, Parul set a new national record in women's steeplechase.
Prannoy shares picture of his bronze medal win at BWF World Championships
Indian shuttler HS Prannoy shared a picture of his bronze medal that he recently won at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships 2023.
Sports Authority of India (SAI) Media on their X (formerly Twitter) handle posted a picture of Prannoy holding his bronze medal.
Prannoy had to settle for a bronze medal as he registered a loss to Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the semifinals of the BWF World Championships on Saturday.
Assam Govt issues notification banning plastic water bottles below 1 litre
The Assam Environment and Forest Department has issued a notification banning the use and production of plastic water bottles below 1000 ml capacity in the state from October 2 this year, said an official statement.
Last month, the Assam government announced that it would ban the production and use of drinking water bottles made of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) of less than 1 litre in volume from October 2 this year.
The Assam Environment and Forest Department on August 23, issued a notification, prohibiting the use or manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale of plastic water bottles below 1000 ml capacity in the state from October 2 this year.
Bray Wyatt: WWE champion dies aged 36
XThree-time WWE world champion Bray Wyatt has died at the age of 36.
The wrestler had been dealing with an undisclosed health issue that had kept him out of the ring since February, but his death was characterised as sudden by his family.
The news was announced by WWE content officer Triple H, who posted on social media that Wyatt, real name Windham Rotunda, had "unexpectedly passed".
Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, was among those paying tribute to the star.
Zepto becomes India’s first unicorn in nearly a year
Grocery startup Zepto said on Friday it has raised $200 million in fresh funding at a valuation of $1.4 billion, making it the first startup in the country to cross the billion-dollar valuation mark in nearly a year.
Zepto said it raised the funds “in the midst of the deepest downturn in capital markets in over a decade” from U.S-based investment firms StepStone Group and Goodwater Capital. Existing backers including Nexus Venture Partners, Glade Brook Capital and Lachy Groom also participated in the deal.
India win 50m pistol women’s team gold medal
The Indian 50m pistol women’s team containing Tiyana, Sakshi Suryavanshi and Kirandeep Kaur bagged the gold medal at the ISSF World Championships 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday.
The Indian trio shot a composite score of 1573-6x to finish on the top of the podium. China finished second with a score of 1567-9x while Mongolia bagged the bronze with a combined score of 1566-3x.

60% of bird species declined in India over a period of 30 years: Report
The report stressed on the need to conserve the most critically threatened species in the country: Jerdon’s Courser, Great Indian Bustard, & others.
Of the 338 bird species studied in India for changes in numbers over the last 30 years, 60 per cent have experienced a decline, says a new report based on data from about 30,000 birdwatchers across the country.
Also, 40 percent (142) of the 359 species evaluated for change over the last seven years have declined, according to the report titled "State of India's Birds".
