India votes against Pakistan's resolution on conventional arms control

India voted against a resolution by Pakistan on 'Conventional arms control at the regional and subregional levels'.

The resolution by Pakistan and Syria on 'Conventional arms control at the regional and subregional levels' in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly was adopted by recorded vote with 179 members voting in favour, an abstention by Israel while India was the sole country voting against the resolution.

The First Committee of the UNGA deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community.

The resolution recognises the “crucial role of conventional arms control in promoting regional and international peace and security.” “Convinced that conventional arms control needs to be pursued primarily in the regional and subregional contexts since most threats to peace and security in the post- cold-war era arise mainly among states located in the same region or subregion,” the resolution said.

Israel passes law to deport relatives of attackers, including citizens

The controversial legislation, proposed by a member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, applies to first-degree relatives, meaning the parents, siblings or children of those found guilty of committing or supporting terrorism.

Israeli human rights organisations say the law is unconstitutional.

Some opposition members of the Knesset, Israel's parliament, suggested it is targeted only at Palestinian citizens of Israel, sometimes called Israeli Arabs.

Over 65 million People Food Insecure in Horn of Africa: UN and IGAD Report

At least 65 million people are food insecure in the Horn of Africa. It was revealed by a joint report released today by the UN and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, IGAD, an East African bloc. This figure marks a slight decline from 66 million in August, attributed to improved rainfall over the past two seasons, particularly in the IGAD region. According to reports, of the 65 million affected people, 36 million reside in IGAD member states, including Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. The report said, extreme weather and climate change, now more severe and frequent, are the primary drivers of food insecurity. The report highlighted that conflict has led to widespread destruction of infrastructure and essential sources of food and income, worsening the already critical food security situation.

Swiss ‘burqa ban’ to take effect from 2025

A contentious Swiss prohibition on facial coverings in public spaces widely known as the “burqa ban” will take effect on Jan. 1, the government said on Wednesday.

Narrowly passed in a 2021 referendum in neutral Switzerland, and condemned by Muslim associations, the measure was launched by the same group that organised a 2009 ban on new minarets.

The governing Federal Council said in a statement it had fixed the start of the ban, and that anyone who unlawfully flouts it faces a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs ($1,144).

The ban does not apply to planes or in diplomatic and consular premises, and faces may also be covered in places of worship and other sacred sites, the government said.
