The Home Ministry’s cybercrime arm, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre, has ordered Microsoft subsidiary GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based messaging application Bitchat, according to a notice.

“The Government of India does not like technologies like Bitchat and wants it taken down,” said the app’s developer and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Friday (July 24, 2026) in an X post, sharing a copy of the notice dated July 23.

A query sent to I4C in this regard elicited no immediate reply.

‘Friday’ and ’13’ have proved lucky for the Elon Musk-owned SpaceX. The space tech giant on Friday launched its Starship rocket on another test flight that marked the spacecraft’s most successful mission yet, deploying 20 next-generation Starlink satellites before making a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean. This was SpaceX’s 13th Starship test flight.

Standing 407 feet (124 metres) tall, the world’s biggest and most powerful rocket lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas. The mission lasted about an hour, ending with the spacecraft descending gently into the Indian Ocean, where it remained afloat, a first for Starship, news agency Associated Press reported.

The flight was closely watched by NASA, which is counting on Starship to serve as the lunar lander for its Artemis programme, including the Artemis III mission that aims to return astronauts to the Moon.

India has secured a lower 10 per cent US tariff under Washington’s new Section 301 forced-labour regime, placing it on par with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan after New Delhi tightened its import rules to prohibit goods made with forced labour. The tariffs India is facing are simultaneously below the 12.5 per cent rate that will apply to economies including Vietnam, Thailand, China and Turkey.

Trade experts cautioned that while the lower tariff band is a positive outcome, New Delhi must ensure that any bilateral trade agreement (BTA) with the US also addresses unresolved issues such as the proposed US tariffs on pharmaceuticals, threatened penalties linked to purchases of Russian oil, and a separate ongoing Section 301 investigation into excess industrial capacity.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed allowing portfolio managers to invest clients’ funds in foreign securities and take unhedged short positions through equity exchange-traded derivatives as part of a comprehensive review of the SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations, 2020 aimed at expanding investment avenues and aligning the regulatory framework with evolving market dynamics.

The proposals have been put out for public consultation through a consultation paper on the draft SEBI (Portfolio Managers) Regulations, 2026.

According to the consultation paper, portfolio managers are currently not permitted to invest client funds in foreign securities.

Google has been fined €890m (£759m) by the EU for allegedly abusing its power by favouring its own apps and services over those from rivals.

It is the first major action against the tech giant under the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA), a landmark law aimed at curbing the power of the world's biggest tech companies.

The Commission argued Google's practices limited consumer choice and gave its own services an unfair advantage over rivals.

But the firm criticised the decision, arguing the EU's requirements could damage services used by millions of European customers.

"To comply, we are having to strip away real-time Search features Europeans love - like instant pricing and direct availability for hotels, flights and restaurants - and dismantle safety protections on Google Play," said Google's president of global affairs Kent Walker.

The Tamil Nadu government has issued an order renaming the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme after former Chief Minister K. Kamaraj. The scheme will henceforth be known as the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Breakfast Scheme.

The Breakfast Scheme for students in Classes I to V in government and government-aided schools was launched during the previous DMK regime in September 2022. After the TVK-led government assumed office, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay directed that the scheme be expanded to cover students in Classes VI to VIII in government and government-aided schools as well.

Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik today said India is uniquely positioned to emerge as a global leader in the green hydrogen sector.

Addressing the 2nd Bharat Green Hydrogen Summit 2026 in New Delhi, through a video message, he said the National Green Hydrogen Mission is helping to create a strong, future-ready ecosystem for clean energy.

Mr Naik said that the global energy transition has entered a new phase, where the focus is on becoming the leading nation in green hydrogen transformation. He said that green hydrogen in the country is no longer merely a future concept but a fast-growing economic opportunity.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the long-range surface-to-air missile Kusha from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The Ministry of Defence said the test was conducted against an electronic target simulating a high-speed, high-altitude aerial threat, which was successfully intercepted by the missile system.

The Ministry said the Kusha missile system is capable of neutralising a wide range of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and large enemy aircraft across a broad range and altitude envelope.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO and all other stakeholders on the successful test. In a social media post, he said the achievement marks an important milestone in India’s defence research and development. Mr Singh said the capability to develop a long-range surface-to-air missile system is possessed by only a handful of nations. He added that the missile system will reduce India’s dependence on imports and significantly strengthen the country’s air defence capability.

India has developed its first indigenous Expendable Turbo Jet Engine in the 350 kg thrust class. The engine has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).

The Ministry of Defence said the development of such a complex system based on DRDO’s design reflects the growing technological capabilities of the Indian defence industry. It said the achievement marks the culmination of years of precision engineering, advanced manufacturing and close collaboration between India’s scientific and industrial communities. The Ministry added that jet engine technology is regarded as one of the most sophisticated engineering disciplines in the world.
