India’s ranking in press freedom falls to 138

  • India’s ranking in the Press Freedom Index has fallen two places to 138, a watchdog said on Wednesday in an annual report, blaming “physical violence” against journalists like Gauri Lankesh as the key reason behind the country’s low ranking.
  • Norway topped the list of having the world’s freest press for the second year in a row, the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said while North Korea remained the most repressive country followed by Eritrea, Turkmenistan, Syria and then China.


Indu Malhotra Will Be First Woman Lawyer Appointed As Supreme Court Judge

  • Senior lawyer Indu Malhotra will be the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as a Supreme Court judge.
  • The law ministry has okayed the recommendation of the Supreme Court's collegium to appoint the senior lawyer to the bench but has decided to hold back its approval to the elevation of the Uttarakhand Chief Justice KM Joseph for now.


Government calls Facebook, Cambridge Analytica replies cryptic, sends second note

  • NEW DELHI: Terming Cambridge Analytica’s response as “cryptic” and “evasive”, the Indian government has sent a second notice — more detailed and stern — to the British data firm seeking answers about its operations in India.
  • Another notice has also been sent to Facebook asking for information on the “security architecture” which is being proposed by Facebook to stem unauthorised usage of its data in the future. 






India, Malaysia to hold military exercise

  • NEW DELHI: The Indian and Malaysian armies will hold a two-week military exercise beginning April 30 in Malaysia as part of efforts to bolster defence cooperation.
  • The joint exercise 'Harimau Shakti' will take place in the dense forests of Sengai Perdik in Hulu Langat district of Malaysia, the Defence Ministry said.


U.S. regulator fines Altaba $35 million over 2014 Yahoo email hack

  • U.S. regulators fined Altaba $35 million to settle charges that kept its massive 2014 cyber security breach a secret for more than two years.
  • Altaba, formerly known as Yahoo, agreed to settle the charges without admitting or denying any wrongdoing.
  • This is the first time the Securities and Exchange Commission has ever gone after a company for failing to disclose a cyber security breach.

Ministry of Housing launches m-Awas app for allotment of Government accommodations

  • Sh. Hardeep Puri, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs (I/C) launched a Mobile App (m-Awas) for allotment of Government accommodations in General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) in Delhi under the control of the Directorate of Estates, here today.

  • Secretary, Housing and Urban Affairs, Sh. Durga Shanker Mishra and other senior officers of the ministry were also present on the occasion. The application has been developed by NIC.


Project Signing: Government of India and World Bank Sign Agreement to Invest in Technology that Addresses India’s Public Health Priorities

  • New Delhi, April 24, 2018 – The Government of India and the World Bank today signed a $125 million agreement to support India in developing an innovative biopharmaceutical and medical devices industry, which is globally competitive and addresses the country’s major concerns around barriers to affordable healthcare.

  • The Innovate in India for Inclusiveness Project (I3) will support Government of India’s Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Program (BIRAC), set up five years ago to support innovative start-ups and collaborations through strategic partnerships.


Remove laws discriminating against leprosy patients: SC tells government

  • Holding that leprosy was curable, the Supreme Court Tuesday asked the Centre and states to do the needful to delete from statute books all laws that discriminated against people suffering from the same. 

  • “Delete from statute books all such laws…We are sure centre and states will rise to the occasion to remove the provision relating to disability. We are conscious that leprosy is absolutely curable,” a bench of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said.


Foreigners can now travel to Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur without a permit

  • NEW DELHI: Foreign tourists, except those from Pakistan, China and Afghanistan, would now be allowed to visit some of the most pristine locations of the country which, so far, were out of bounds for them without a special permit, officials said on Monday.

  • The home ministry has decided to relax the six-decade-old Protected Area Permit regime from Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur for five years with effect from April 1, a ministry official said.
