1 Asian Wrestling Championships gold medallist Ravi Dahiya grateful to Target Olympic Podium Scheme for support

Olympics-bound Ravi Dahiya, who won the gold medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships 2021 in Almaty, Uzbekistan, is raring to go for the upcoming games in Tokyo.

Ravi has been a part of the Government of India’s Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in October 2019 after he had won a gold medal at the Senior World Championships and also in the process earned an Olympics quota in the men’s 57kg freestyle category.

The support provided to Ravi from TOPS in the Olympic cycle includes the following:
● Towards International training and competitions = Rs. 5,07,981/- 
● Out of Pocket Allowance = Rs 9,00,000/- till April 19 2021 
● TOTAL = Rs. 14,07,981/- approx

Showing his gratitude towards the Sports Authority of India and the TOPS support, Ravi mentions, “Sports Authority of India and TOPS are doing their best to help us. The TOPS has benefitted me a lot. Training has gone a notch higher and they have given us good sparring partners, more international exposures, physiotherapists and I also have a personal foreign coach now. Camps were also set up with utmost safety during the Covid times.”

2 Union Minister of Education launches “World 1st affordable and long-lasting hygiene product DuroKea Series”

Union Minister of Education Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ virtually launched “World 1st affordable and long-lasting hygiene product DuroKea Series”, developed by IIT Hyderabad researchers.

Researcher from Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad led Dr. Jyotsnendu Giri, Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering and founder EaffoCare Innovation Pvt. Ltd incubating at iTIC, IIT Hyderabad has developed innovative DuroKea long-lasting technologies to combat COVID-19 virus spreading. Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Hyderabad, Shri B. V. R. Mohan Reddy; Prof. Founder Dean ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Hyderabad, M. Srinivas; Director IIT Hyderabad, Prof. B. S. Murty and other officials from IIT Hyderabad were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion Pokhriyal said that Durokea Product is aligned with the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to attain self reliance. This next generation DuroKea antimicrobial technology starts at Rs. 189, kills 99.99% of germs instantly and leaves behind the long-lasting protective nanoscale coating up to 35 days till next wash, he said.

The Minister informed that the unique property of DuroKea range is to ensure instant killing (within 60 sec) and prolonged protection which is an immense necessity during this current pandemic situation. This revolutionary antimicrobial property of DuroKea products has been tested and certified by Indian Government accredited lab and field-tested at the IIT Hyderabad campus, he added.

3 Railways Ministry approves to transport Liquid Medical Oxygen container trucks on Roll-on roll-off basis

Indian Railways has given in-principle approval to transport Liquid Medical Oxygen container trucks on Roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) basis. In a first of its kind operation approved by the Railway Ministry, the Indian Railways will soon carry cryogenic tanker trucks loaded with Liquid Medical Oxygen from one part of the country to another.

The decision has been taken by the Railway Ministry in view of request received from Maharashtra government for transportation of liquid oxygen into the state. The Railways have said that through this mechanism a significant amount of transportation cost and crucial time can be saved while delivering Medical Oxygen to Health care facilities, specially in view of surge in COVID cases.

4 Vikas ousts European Champion; two Indians in quarters at AIBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Championships

Continuing India’s fine run at the AIBA Youth Men’s and Women’s World Championships, Vikas pulled off a stunning upset win against the reigning European Youth Champion Yasen Radev as five Indian boxers registered remarkable victories on the second day of the tournament in Poland.

Playing in the men’s 52kg category, Vikas started the game cautiously but soon took the charge of the game with an aggressive intent. The Indian made Radev, a gold medallist from recent Adriatic Pearl, work hard with his swift moment and precise punches before he outpunched Bulgarian 5-0 comfortably. Vikas will now square off against Mongolia’s Sukhbat Enkhzorigt in the second round on Day 3.

The reigning Asian Youth Champion Vinka (60kg) and Poonam (57kg) also extended their winning momentum as the duo asserted supremacy over their opponents Tara Bohatjuk of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary’s Beata Varga respectively in their pre-quarterfinals. Referee had to stop the contest after the Indians landed a number of powerful blows against their opponents and they were declared winners with RSC verdict. With entry into the last-8 stage, Vinka and Poonam are now just a bout away from securing India medals.

5 India beat Olympic champions Argentina 3-0 in second match of FIH Pro League

In Hockey, India registered a comfortable win against reigning Olympic champions Argentina in the second match of FIH Hockey Pro League at Buenos Aires last night. Men in Blue won the game by beating the host by 3-0.
 
In the first match, India beat Argentina 3-2.

6 Sanskrit learning app ‘Little Guru’ to be launched in Bangladesh today

A Sanskrit learning app will be launched in Bangladesh by the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) of the High Commission of India today. The Sanskrit learning app is part of the campaign being run by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR) to promote Sanskrit language among students, religious scholars, Indologists and historians across the world.
 

The Sanskrit learning app ‘Little Guru’ is based on an interactive platform which will make Sanskrit learning easy, entertaining and fun.
 
This app will help people who are already learning Sanskrit or those who are desirous to learn Sanskrit to do so in an easy manner based on games, competition, rewards, peer to peer interactions, etc.  This App combines education with entertainment, said a press release issued by the High Commission of India on Sunday.

7 Vishnu Saravanan qualifies for Tokyo

Subedar Vishnu Saravanan was enrolled into Boys Sports Company, MEG & Centre in 2015 as a Boys Sports Cadet. His father Subedar Saravanan is a Madras Sappers Sailor.

In a very short period after joining MEG Boys Sports Company, with his self-determination and support from MEG he participated in Junior National & Youth National Championships and won medals. His performance has been consistently improving and he participated in the Hongkong Sailing Week-2016 (ASAF Series - 2) and won silver medal in Laser Class. He has till now participated in thirty international events with thirteen ‘top three’ finishes. He participated in ten Senior & Youth National championships and won Gold medals in all the categories. Based on the outstanding performance he was enrolled into Madras Engineer Group (MEG) as a direct entry Naib Subedar (Junior Commissioned Officer) in the year 2017.

 
After enrolment into the Army, Naib Subedar Vishnu Saravanan won his first Gold Medal in Senior National championship 2018 and since then he has participated in several international championships. He participated in the Laser Youth U-21 World Sailing Championship 2019 held at Croatia, Europe from 26 Oct to 02 Nov 2019 and won Bronze Medal in Laser Under-21 category where a total of 144 sailors from 41 countries participated.

8 PM Modi releases Hindi Version of Odisha Itihaas by Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab

Prime Minister Narendra Modi releases the Hindi translation of the book ‘Odisha Itihaas’ written by ‘Utkal Keshari’ Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab from Ambedkar International Center, Janpath, New Delhi.

The book, available in Odia and English so far, has been translated into Hindi by Shankarlal Purohit.The event marking the release of the Hindi version has been organised by Harekrushna Mahtab Foundation.

 Dr. Harekrushna Mahtab was a notable figure in the Indian Independence Movement. He also served as Chief Minister of Odisha from 1946 to 1950 and from 1956 to 1961. He wrote the book ‘Odisha Itihaas’ in Ahmednagar Fort Jail, where he was imprisoned for more than two years during 1942-1945.

9 NRAI announces Team for Tokyo Olympics

The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the governing body of the Olympic sport of Shooting in the country, today announced a 15-member Indian contingent for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics in July.

The Selection Committee after a meeting on Sunday afternoon which lasted over five hours, also announced a set of 14 reserve shooters for each of the eligible events, particularly with an eye on the raging Covid-19 pandemic, as had been suggested last month by the NRAI President, Mr Raninder Singh. Reigning world number one in Women’s 10M Air Rifle Elavenil Valarivan, was the only athlete to have been picked in the team, who had not won, one of the 15-quotas won by the National Team. She would avail of the quota won by Anjum Moudgil in the event.

It was also decided by the National Selection Committee that the quota won by Chinki Yadav in the Women’s 25M Pistol would be swapped in favour of Anjum Moudgil, to enable her to compete in the Women’s 50M Rifle 3 Positions event as India’s second entry alongside former World Champion Tejaswini Sawant.The quota won for the nation can only be swapped within the same gender.

10 Hubert Hurkacz of Poland clinches Miami Open title defeating Jannik Sinner of Italy

In Tennis, 26th seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland won the biggest title of his career beating 19-year-old Jannik Sinner of Italy in the Miami Open final last night. Hurkacz, 24, improved to 10-0 in Florida this year, including the Delray Beach title in January.

Ranked 37th, he beat two top-10 opponents in the same tournament for the first time, and he is projected to climb to a career-high 16th in next week's rankings.

Hurkacz was poised playing his first final in the top-level ATP series, the Masters 1000. Sinner, playing in just his third Masters 1000 tournament, wobbled serving at 6-5 in the first set and was broken at love. Hurkacz became Poland’s first Masters 1000 champion.
