2 Manchester City win thrilling penalty shootout vs Sevilla to lift UEFA Super Cup title

Manchester City marked its first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup by beating Sevilla 5-4 in a penalty shootout on Wednesday to add another piece of silverware to its vast haul under manager Pep Guardiola. After a 1-1 draw in regulation time and then nine successful spot kicks in the shootout, Nemanja Gudelj struck his attempt against the crossbar to hand City victory inside Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis. It was a 15th trophy won by City in Guardiola’s reign that started in 2016 and made up for the loss to Arsenal in a penalty shootout in the Community Shield 10 days ago.

“The manager made it so clear to us before the game how much he wants to win this trophy,” City midfielder Jack Grealish said about the annual match between last season’s winners of the Champions League (City) and Europa League (Sevilla). "You want to win everything anyway but that gave us more of an urge. This club has never won it. It’s a brilliant feeling.”

3 7-day multi-lingual short story festival begins in Jammu

The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL) 7-day multilingual short story festival began on Thursday at the JKAACL premises in Jammu.

This is for the first time that such a big festival of short stories was organised by JKAACL.

Writers of Dogri, Hindi, Punjabi, Gojri, Pahari and Kashmiri languages presented their short stories in the 7-day festival.

The festival featured senior writers along with young budding writers of J&K. On the inaugural day, writers of the Dogri language presented their short stories.

5 AICTE Partners With Jio Institute For Faculty Development Programme On AI

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has partnered with Jio Institute for a faculty development programme on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science, according to a release.

Jio Institute, known for its AI and DS programme, will serve as the host institution for the five-day residential faculty development programme.

AICTE has collaborated with Jio Institute to introduce a faculty development programme on AI and data science, the release said, adding AICTE Chairman TG Sitharam will inaugurate the programme on August 21, 2023.

6 IPS officer Shatrujeet Kapur takes charge as new Haryana DGP

Shatrujeet Kapur, senior IPS Officer of 1990-batch, on Wednesday assumed the charge of Director General of Police (DGP), Haryana, after an official order was issued by the government.

7 Chandrayaan's Big Step: Lander "Vikram's" Separation Ahead Of Moon Landing

The Chandrayaan-3's lander 'Vikram' has successfully separated from spacecraft and is now expected to land on the moon on August 23. "LM is successfully separated from the Propulsion Module (PM). LM is set to descend to a slightly lower orbit upon a deboosting planned for tomorrow," ISRO said in a tweet.

fter separation, the lander is expected to undergo a "deboost" (the process of slowing down) to place it in an orbit where the Perilune (closest point to the Moon) is 30 kilometres and Apolune (farthest point from the Moon) is 100 km.

9 Indian men bag 10m air pistol team bronze at ISSF World Championship

The Indian squad warmed up with the men’s air pistol team bronze medal in the World Championship shooting in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Thursday.

Shiva Narwal, Sarabjot Singh and Arjun Singh Cheema were far from making the individual final of top-8 but together got the medal behind China and Germany.

In women’s air pistol also, it was hard for the Indian shooters Esha Singh, Palak Gulia and Divya TS as they placed 32nd, 40th and 66th in a strong field of 118 shooters. As a team, they placed 11th.

In skeet, Anant Jeet Singh Naruka shot 48 in two rounds, and found himself in the 45th spot, as there were 10 with perfect 50 and 29 more with 49.

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), has come out with a new mobile application ‘SAMUDRA’ - Smart Access to Marine Users for Ocean Data Resources and Advisories, offering comprehensive information on all ocean related services, useful for both seafarers and the fishing community.

Scientists at the institute informed that the mobile app empowers users with real-time updates and critical alerts on oceanic disasters such as tsunamis, storm surges, high waves, and swell surge alerts, for the individuals and communities to stay informed and take necessary precautions towards the protection of lives and property.
