The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC), a national business association, announced the appointment of Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director of Jindal Stainless Limited, as its new president.

The announcement was made at ICC’s annual plenary session held in New Delhi on Friday.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was the chief guest.

Piyush Goyal welcomed Jindal’s appointment, emphasizing the critical role of young leaders in shaping India’s future, a release said.

He called upon Indian Chamber of Commerce to expand its support for startups, women entrepreneurs, and the evolving startup ecosystem while leveraging government initiatives to enhance skill development and employment among India’s youth.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has barred four non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), including two microfinance institutions (MFIs), from sanctioning and disbursing loans for charging exorbitant interest rates to the borrowers.

These four entities are Asirvad Microfinance, Arohan Financial Services (also an MFI), DMI Finance, which provides personal, consumption, and micro, small and medium enterprises loans, and Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal’s Navi Finserv, which offers home and personal loans.

The ban will take effect on October 21 to “facilitate closure of transactions in the pipeline”, the regulator said in a statement.

In the monetary policy statement on October 8, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das cautioned NBFCs, including MFIs, about prioritising excessive equity returns. He expressed concern over exorbitant interest rates coupled with high processing fees and frivolous penalties.

Indian Navy and the Royal Navy of Oman recently concluded their bilateral naval exercise, 'Naseem Al Bahr' off the coast of Goa.

The exercise lasted from October 13 to October 18. The Indian Navy highlighted the details of the naval exercise on the social media platform, X.

As per the press statement, the exercise was conducted in two phases, with the harbour phase that lasted from October 13 to October 15, which was followed by the sea phase which was conducted from October 16 to October 18 onwards.

As part of harbour activities, personnel from both Navies engaged in professional interactions, including Subject Matter Expert Exchanges and planning conferences. In addition to this, sports fixtures and social engagements were also held.

Pakistan's amendment-draft">26th constitutional amendment draft was approved by the federal Cabinet on Sunday during a meeting presided over by the country's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as per ARY News.

India’s candidates have been elected in leadership positions in all 10 Study Groups of the International Telecommunication Unions’ (ITU) Standardization Sector (ITU-T) in the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) which is underway in New Delhi. The study groups include Operational aspects, Economic & policy issues, security, future networks among others.

The Ministry of Communications in a statement said, India has retained its Chair position in one group and secured Vice-Chair positions in all other 9 Study Groups. With this India has enhanced its leadership position in ITU-T to 11 positions in WTSA-2024 from 7 in WTSA-2022. India is currently hosting the International Telecommunication Unions’ (ITU) World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA) 2024 at Bharat Mandapam. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15th October and will continue till the 24th of this month. It is for the first time that WTSA is being conducted in the Asia-Pacific region and it would set the direction of standardization activities ITU-T and its work for the next four years. This year’s WTSA-24 has witnessed more than 3700 delegates from over 160 countries, the highest ever for any WTSA assembly.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) had a net addition of 18.53 lakh members to its subscriber base in August. The payroll data, which was released on Sunday (October 20, 2024) said that in August this year, the growth in subscriber base was 9.07% when compared with August 2023. The Union Labour Ministry said in a release that the growth in enrolments reflects increased employment opportunities and heightened awareness of employee benefits.

9.30 lakh new members were added in August 2024, representing an increase of 0.48% in new members when compared with August 2023. “This surge in new memberships can be attributed to growing employment opportunities, increased awareness of employee benefits, and EPFO’s successful outreach programmes,” the Ministry said.

Alok Verma is set to be the next Director in-charge of Steel Authority of India’s (SAIL) Rourkela Steel Plant. He has been recommended for the post by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) Panel on Thursday. Presently, he is serving as Executive Director (Works) in the same organisation.

Verma has been recommended for the post of Director in-charge of SAIL's Rourkela Steel Plant from a list of 12 candidates, who were interviewed by the PESB panel in its selection meeting held on October 17. Out of 12 candidates, 11 candidates were from SAIL and the candidates was from Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL).

As Director-in-charge of Rourkela Steel Plant, Verma will be a member of the Board of Directors and will report to the Chairman. He will be the overall in-charge of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and be responsible for the efficient functioning of the Plant and the concerned mines for achieving the corporate objectives and performance parameters. He will also be responsible for project implementation at the plant or concerned mines and for marketing or sales of products from the plant or concerned mines.
