2 FIDE World Blitz Championship: Koneru Humpy Eyeing A Grand Double

Having achieved the monumental feat of winning the World Rapid chess title for a second time, Indian stalwart Koneru Humpy would be eyeing a grand double when the FIDE World Blitz Championship commences here on Tuesday.

Humpy had on Sunday capped a wonderful year for Indian chess, defeating Irene Sukandar of Indonesia to emerge the FIDE Women’s World Rapid Chess champion.

The Indian had won the event back in 2019 at Georgia and, on Sunday, became only the second player after China’s Ju Wenjun to clinch the title a second time.

At stake is not just the title but a chance to win another USD 60,000 (around Rs 50 lakhs) cheque as the Blitz championship carries the same prize money as Rapid.

The strong Indian contingent is geared up for the championship that will have 13 rounds in the ‘Open’ category and 11 in the women’s section.

4 Haryana Steelers clinch maiden Pro Kabaddi title after big win over Patna Pirates

Haryana Steelers produced an outstanding display on the mat to beat Patna Pirates 32-23 and clinch their maiden Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) crown in Pune on Sunday. With show-stopper Mohammadreza Shadloui in full flow, Haryana Steelers won the final with consummate ease. For Haryana Steelers, Shivam Patare scored nine points, Shadloui seven and Vinay added six more. The champions were awarded Rs 3 crore, while the runners-up got Rs 1.8 crore.

Haryana Steelers were off to a quick start, picking up the first few points and the lead in the early exchanges. Devank and Ankit put up a dogged fight Patna Pirates, but Haryana Steelers kept dictating terms and controlling the tempo, with Shivam Patare and Shadloui doing the heavy lifting.

Haryana Steelers' defence, led by Jaideep and Rahul Sethpal, showed why it considered one of the best units in the competition, as it made scoring extremely difficult for Patna Pirates. However, as the half progressed, Gurdeep and Sudhakar brought Patna Pirates within touching distance of their opponents. Devank and Ayan then levelled things up, before Shivam Patare and Vinay put Haryana Steelers in the box seat. At the half-time break, Haryana Steelers led 15-12.

8 Hockey India League 2024-25 to begin tomorrow with Rourkela as Host City

The 2024-25 edition of the Hockey India League (HIL) is set to begin tomorrow with Rourkela, Odisha, serving as one of the host cities. The opening match will feature Delhi SG Pipers facing off against Gonasika at the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela. Seven teams have already arrived in the city in preparation for the tournament. The men’s league will be played in two phases. 9 Paris Olympic pairing of Maheshwari-Anantjeet win Skeet mixed team national title

10 Bald eagle officially designated as the United States National Bird after 240 years

The bald eagle, a symbol of the power and strength of the United States for more than 240 years, earned an overdue honor. It officially became the country’s national bird. President Joe Biden signed into law legislation sent to him by Congress that amends the United States Code to correct what had long gone unnoticed and designate the bald eagle – familiar to many because of its white head, yellow beak and brown body – as the national bird.

The bald eagle has appeared on the Great Seal of the United States, which is used in official documents, since 1782, when the design was finalized. The seal is made up of the eagle, an olive branch, arrows, a flag-like shield, the motto “E Pluribus Unum” and a constellation of stars.
