1 Google Earth covers 98 percent of entire population

Search engine giant Google has revealed that it's powerful mapping service, Google Earth now covers more than 98 percent of the world, and has captured 10 million miles of Street View imagery, a distance that could circle the globe more than 400 times.

In its official blog, Google explained how imagery, the main ingredient of the map-making process, has improved.

When it comes to Google Earth, the software that lets you browse the globe with 3D representation, right from the comfort of your couch, offers 6 million square miles of high definition satellite images, covering more than 98 percent of the entire population.

Google also shared more information about how exactly all these images are captured.

2 India celebrates Vijay Diwas: 16 December

The nation celebrates Vijay Diwas today to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971 war. Rich tributes are being paid to the martyrs who laid down their lives during the war. It was on this day in 1971, the chief of the Pakistani forces, General AA Khan Niazi, along with 93 thousand troops, had surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces consisting of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini. The end of the war also resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.

On the occasion Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he salutes the courage and valour of Indian soldiers. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, the history created by our army on this day in 1971 will always be engraved in the golden words.
Minister of State for Defence Shripad Yesso Naik, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat, Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria and Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh pay tribute at National War Memorial on the occasion of Vijay Diwas.

3 FIH unveils new world ranking system for 2020

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) unveiled a new world ranking system for 2020 in Lausanne, Switzerland today.

It will come into effect from the first of next month. For a better reflection of current performances, the new ranking will be match-based instead of tournament-based calculation.  

The FIH said, the new world ranking system has been launched after 12 months of painstaking research, analysis and testing.

It cited numerous restrictions of the tournament-based system for the change.

The world body governing hockey also said that the new model removes much of the subjectivity surrounding continental weighing by creating a system which is fair to all.

4 Maldives sign contract with joint venture of Indian companies for development of Addu

Maldives government signed a contract with a joint venture of Indian companies for preparation of project report and development of Addu, second biggest city in the island nation.

The contract was signed on Thursday by L & T engineering limited and Lea associates south asia for the Addu Road and Reclamation Project. The scope of the project includes land reclamation, construction of roads and storm water drainage system in Addu. This will upgrade existing infrastructure and mitigate the flood situation in Addu.

It will be financed through 800 million US dollars line of credit extended by EXIM bank of India for strengthening of Indo- Maldives development cooperation. It is the second project after water and sanitation project in 34 islands. India and Maldives have seen close cooperation since coming of new government under President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

5 Defence Minister chairs Parliament's meeting of Consultative Committee

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today chaired the meeting of Consultative Committee of Parliament for the Ministry of Defence in New Delhi.

The subject of the meeting was the Border Roads Organization (BRO). During the meeting, the Minister lauded the efforts of BRO in building border infrastructure and contributing to the improvement of lives of people residing in the border areas.

Border Roads Development Board was set up in 1960 for expeditious execution of road construction projects in the North and North-Eastern states for enhancing the defence preparedness and the economic development of the border areas.

6 Space startup with AI solution to stubble burning wins ‘Space Oscar’

A Gurgaon-based startup working in utilizing satellite data to solve environmental problems has won an international prize for its AI (artificial intelligence)- based tool to measure and monitor farm fires and stubble burning across India.

Millions of tonnes of crop residue is burnt on farms to clear them for new crops every winter in North India, releasing massive amounts of greenhouse gas emissions which cause peak in pollution levels in Delhi and elsewhere. Stubble burning is also a major problem in other parts of the country. Efforts to utilize crop waste for power generation and other applications are hampered due to lack of data about availability and quality the waste.

The application developed by Gurgaon-based startup, Blue Sky Analytics, is an AI-enabled platform that uses satellite data for improved monitoring, supply chain and pricing analysis as well as allocation of crop waste for use in other industries as raw material.

7 Nirmala Sitharaman among world's 100 most powerful women: Forbes

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, HCL Corporation CEO and Executive Director Roshni Nadar Malhotra and Biocon Founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw have been named among the world's 100 most powerful women by Forbes.

The Forbes 2019 list of ‘The World's 100 Most Powerful Women’ has been topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, followed by President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde in the second spot and Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, ranked third. Also on the list is Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina (29).

“In 2019, women around the globe took action, claiming leadership positions in government, business, philanthropy and media. These trailblazers are not to be messed with," Forbes said.

8 ISRO begins preparations for setting up third rocket launchpad

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has begun preparatory works for setting up a third rocket launchpad in the small coastal hamlet of Kulashekhrapattinam in the Thuthukudi district of Tamil Nadu. 

The District Administration has appointed a Special Tehsildar along with eight more Tahsildars to speed up the process of land acquisition for the centre.

At present, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has two launch pads at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. The demand for additional launch pads has arisen as a result of the increase in the number of satellite launches from India, both for domestic and international customers. ISRO says that it had launched as many as 17 missions in 2018 alone.

9 Odisha bags FICCI India Sports Award

Odisha Government has bagged the prestigious Best State Promoting Sports Award at the FICCI India Sports Awards 2019 held at New Delhi on Wednesday.

Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera and Secretary Vishal Kumar Dev received the award on behalf of the Government at a function where sporting icons were honoured for their achievements.

The award was given to Odisha in recognition for its superlative achievement and contributions to promotion of sports.

In last one year, Odisha has made significant strides in sports by hosting some of the prestigious international sporting events, including the Hockey Olympic Qualifiers and Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship.

10 Salman Khan appointed as Pepsi’s new brand ambassador

Food and beverage giant PepsiCo has roped in Bollywood actor Salman Khan as the new face of its flagship Pepsi brand of carbonated beverage in India. To note, the actor has been the face of rival Coca-Cola’s popular ThumsUp brand for years and was recently seen promoting Parle Agro-backed soft drink Appy Fizz.

“We are excited to announce Pepsi’s collaboration with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan. Over the last year, Swag has been the underlying message throughout Brand Pepsi’s campaigns, celebrating the innate self-belief of the Indian consumer today. In 2020, we look forward to building the brand’s Har Ghoont Mein Swag proposition with Salman in 2020,” said a PepsiCo India spokesperson.

Khan had previously endorsed PepsiCo’s Mountain Dew drink. Now, he will be a crucial cog in its flagship brand’s campaigns against Ranbir Kapoor-endorsed Coca Cola.
