Jaipur to host 25th edition of IIFA Awards

Jaipur, The 25th International Indian Film Academy Awards will be held in Jaipur from March 7 to March 9, 2025, the show organisers announced on Sunday.

The announcement comes in the run-up of the 2024 edition of the awards, set to begin in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, for the third consecutive year from September 27.

An MoU was signed between Rajasthan Tourism Department and the IIFA for the silver jubilee celebrations of the IIFA Awards, to be held in the state capital next year.

An agreement signing ceremony was organised at the city's iconic Albert Hall in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari. Commissioner Tourism VP Singh signed on behalf of the Tourism Department and Vice President STJ Global Entertainment and Media Suresh Iyer signed on behalf of the academy.

Diya Kumari said IIFA 2025 will promote tourism in Rajasthan, adding it is for the second time that the event is taking place in India. First such event was held in Mumbai in 2019.



Chiranjeevi sets Guinness Record as Most Prolific Film Star in Indian Cinema

Telugu superstar Chiranjeevi, fondly called Megastar, by his fans was honoured by The Guinness World Records. They awarded him the Most Prolific Film Star in Indian Cinema. Aamir Khan and a member of the Guinness Records team handed over the award to Chiranjeevi on September 22, which incidentally marks the day he made his debut in cinema in 1978.

The Waltair Veerayya actor set a record for his dance performances with over 537 songs and 24,000 dance moves in 46 years. No other actor in and outside India has achieved this milestone. Reportedly, the Guinness team only included 143 films, while Chiranjeevi has acted in over 150 films.

Chiranjeevi, in his statement, mentioned that he never imagined of setting a Guinness World Record. He thanked his producers, directors, music directors, choreographers and fans for their support.



Pune airport to be renamed 'Tukaram Maharaj Airport'

The Maharashtra government on Monday officially approved the renaming of Pune airport to 'Tukaram Maharaj Airport' in honour of the revered 17th-century saint. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting held today.

This move aims to pay tribute to Sant Tukaram Maharaj, a prominent spiritual figure in Maharashtra's history, known for his devotional poetry and influence on the Bhakti movement.

Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari had previously recommended renaming the Pune airport and stated that he will seek approval from the centre.

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said on X that the first step towards renaming the international airport in Pune as Jagadguru Santshrestha Tukaram Maharaj Pune International Airport' has been taken today and the proposal given by us has been approved by the state government.



ICMR gets UN award for successes in control of non-communicable diseases

The ICMR has received the prestigious 2024 @UN Inter-Agency Task Force Award for achievements in advancing multi-sectoral action on the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and mental health among others, Union Health Minister J P Nadda announced on Wednesday.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)'s initiatives, from establishing national centres for Assistive Health Technology to promoting sustainable assistive products and conducting the world's largest AT survey are making a lasting impact, he further said.

"Delighted to share that ICMR has been honored with the prestigious 2024 @UN Inter-Agency Task Force Award for outstanding achievements in advancing multisectoral action on the prevention and control of NCDs, mental health, and the broader NCD-related SDGs (sustainable development goals)," Nadda said in a tweet.



Laapataa Ladies is India’s official entry to Oscars 2025

Ending speculation over India’s official entry for the best foreign film category at the 97th Academy Awards, the Film Federation of India (FFI) in Chennai selected Kiran Rao-directed Laapataa Ladies for submission.

Expressing her gratitude to “the selection committee and to everyone who believed in the film”, Rao in her social media post wrote: “It is indeed a great privilege to be selected from among such amazing Indian films this year — who are equally worthy contenders for this honour.”

Set in the heartland, Laapataa Ladies tells the coming-of-age story of two newlywed brides, who are mistakenly exchanged during a train ride to their in-law’s homes. The film produced by Aamir Khan Productions emerged as the top choice for India’s Oscar entry out of 29 movies which were under consideration. Khan in his media statement said he was “proud of Kiran and her entire team” and hoped that the film would be “able to win the hearts of the members of the Academy”.



Two Russians set record for longest stay on International Space Station

Two Russians on Friday set a record for the longest continuous stay on the International Space Station, according to Russia's space agency.

Roscosmos said Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub broke the old record of 370 days, 21 hours and 22 minutes, which was set in September 2023 by Russians Sergei Prokopiev and Dmitry Petelin and American Francisco Rubio.

Chub and Kononenko will add several days to their total before their scheduled return to Earth on Monday.

The 59-year-old Kononenko holds other space duration records, including the most cumulative time in space 1,110 days over the course of five missions by the time he lands in Kazakhstan next week.



Sangram Singh makes history, becomes first Indian male wrestler to win MMA fight

PM Modi announces India will open new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22 announced that India will open new consulates in two American cities — Boston and Los Angeles, PTI reported. He was addressing Indian Americans in New York's at the Nassau Veterans Coliseum.

Modi said this comes amid long-pending demand for consulates in these cities from the fast-growing Indian American community, the report added.

“Friends last year, I had announced that our government had plans to open a new consulate in Seattle. It is now operational. I had asked for suggestions from you for two more consulates. I am happy to announce that after reviewing your suggestions, India has decided to open two new consulates in Boston and Los Angeles,” Modi stated.



Lt Gen Muhammad Asim Malik appointed as Pakistan spy agency ISI’s new Director General

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General, ARY News reported, quoting ISPR on Monday.

The newly appointed head of ISI, who succeeded Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, will assume command of the Pakistani intelligence agency on September 30.

Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik is currently serving as an Adjutant General at the general headquarters in Rawalpindi.

The newly-appointed chief has previously led the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan and the Infantry Division in Balochistan in the past, reported ARY News.



Haifa Day celebrated in the national capital

Haifa Day was celebrated today in New Delhi to honour the martyrs of the Battle of Haifa. Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador of Israel to India Reuven Azar hailed the relationship between the two countries. He praised how both the countries have repealed sovereignty and established democracies.

Indian Soldiers, who were part of World War I in 1918 from the British Indian Army fought the battle of Haifa. The battle was a decisive victory for the Indian soldiers, who defeated the Ottoman Empire and their German allies.
