1 Rajasthan: Gehlot govt forms Guru Gorakhnath Board to identify problems of backward classes

Rajasthan government on Saturday formed the Guru Gorakhnath Board to identify the problems and issues plaguing the Jogi, Yogi, and Nath communities.

The Board will send suggestions to the state government on the basis of primary survey report in a bid to provide basic and necessary facilities to these backward classes.

Order to this effect were issued by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment after Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot cleared the proposal to form the board.

2 PM Narendra Modi to participate in 9th National Handloom Day celebration today in New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the 9th National Handloom Day celebration today Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, Delhi. During the programme, Mr Modi will also launch the e-portal of 'Bhartiya Vastra evam Shilp Kosh'- a Repository of Textiles and Crafts that has been developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology NIFT. 

In a tweet, Mr Modi underlined the significance of the occasion in reinforcing the nation's dedication to promote indigenous textiles and handlooms in line with the 'Vocal For Local' initiative.

3 Bangladesh allows four transit routes to India

The Bangladeshi government has approved four routes for the transportation of goods to merchants in Tripura and other northeastern Indian states, Dhaka Tribune reported.

Chittagong Port-Akhaura-Agartala, Mongla Port-Akhaura-Agartala, Chittagong-Bibirbazar-Srimantapur, and Mongla Port-Bibirbazar-Srimantapur are the four routes.

In a recent news conference, the Industries and Commerce Minister of Tripura, Santana Chakma, said that Bangladesh and India have agreed to allow Indian traders to ship products through the ports of Chittagong and Mongla.

4 Prez Murmu inaugurates Festival of Libraries 2023 in New Delhi

President Droupadi Murmu on 5th August 2023 inaugurated the "Festival of Libraries 2023" at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. The two-day Festival, which is being organised by the Ministry of Culture, will highlight iconic libraries from across the world in order to initiate a conversation on the modernisation and digitisation of libraries in India. The festival is a part of the second phase of the 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav' and is in line with the Prime Minister's vision to foster the development and digitisation of libraries and cultivate a culture of reading in India. It aims at facilitating the formulation of action-oriented policies for the development of Model Libraries in India, right down to the village and community levels.

Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu said, the development of libraries is linked to the development of society and culture. She said, it is also the measure of progress of civilisation and culture. She added that Libraries were used to act as a bridge between developed civilizations. President said, the effort to modernize and digitise libraries is very important. She said that libraries have become more accessible with the use of information and communication technology. She said, the National Virtual Library of India is being developed to fulfill the vision of One Nation One Digital Library.

5 PM Modi to attend BRICS Summit in Johannesburg on Aug 22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to attend the BRICS Summit in South Africa's Johannesburg on August 22-24 comes as a surprise to those who expected that he will follow the footsteps of Russian president Vladimir Putin and attend the summit virtually rather than physically.

Fact is that even though China tries to dominate the BRICS forum, India along with Brazil get to say their part in this multi-lateral institution.

6 Google Doodle celebrates 109th birth anniversary of trangender cyclist Willy De Bruyn

Search engine giant Google on Friday celebrated the 109th birth anniversary of Belgian cyclist Willy De Bruyn by creating a doodle of him riding a bicycle.

Born in 1914 in Erembodegem, Belgium, De Bruyn was an intersexual person, that is with a combination of male and female biological traits. However, due to stricter gender norms at that time, De Bruyn’s parents had to register him as either a boy or a girl. He was assigned a female at birth and named Elvira.

7 Cabinet clears new telecom bill and postal services bill

The Union Cabinet is learnt to have cleared the Draft Indian Telecommunications Bill, according to two people familiar with the development.

The Cabinet is also learnt to have cleared the Postal Services Bill, 2023 dealing with the functioning of post offices in the country, which will replace the Indian Post Office Act of 1898, they said. This bill is slated to be taken to Parliament for approval in the ongoing monsoon session.

8 SBI reports 178 pc increase in net profits in Q1FY24

Lender State Bank of India (SBI) reported a 178 per cent rise in its net profit to Rs 16,884 crore in the April-June 2023 quarter against Rs 6,068 crore reported same period last year.

The state-owned lender’s net interest income during the quarter rose by 24.71 per cent to Rs 38,905 crore. It was at Rs 31,196 same quarter of last year.
