Shri Manoj Kumar, Chairman cum Managing Director, Western Coalfields Limited (WECOLI) was honored with the prestigious “IMMA Life Time Achievement Award”. This award was given to Shri Kumar during the national seminar organized on the topic “Green Mining Initiatives: Indian Mineral Industry Perspective” on 13 January 2024 at Hotel Tuli International, Nagpur.

Shri Manoj Kumar is the Chairman cum Managing Director of WCL since 01.01.2021. Prior to this, since November 2018, Shri Kumar has been the Director (Technical) at WCL.

2 LAUNCH OF 25T BOLLARD PULL TUG, BHISHM AT M/s TITAGARH RAIL SYSTEMS LTD, KOLKATA

25T Bollard Pull (BP) Tug, Bhishm was launched by Cmde S Sreekumar, Warship Production Superintendent (Kolkata) on 14 Jan 24 at M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (M/s TRSL), Kolkata. This Tug is a proud flag bearer of “Make in India” initiative of Govt of India.

Contract for construction and delivery of six 25T BP Tugs was concluded with M/s TRSL, Kolkata in consonance with “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative of the Government of India. These Tugs are being built under the classification rules of Indian Register of Shipping (IRS). The availability of Tugs will provide impetus to Operational commitments of IN by facilitating assistance to Naval ships and submarines during berthing and un-berthing, turning and manoeuvring in confined waters. The Tugs will also provide afloat firefighting assistance to ships alongside, at anchorage and will also have capability to conduct limited Search and Rescue Operations.

3 Delhi LG approves proposal to permit 32 more establishments to operate 24X7

Thirty-two more establishments--departmental stores, shops selling cosmetics and beauty products, and sweets shops--will be allowed to operate 24x7 in the capital, taking the total number of such commercial establishments to over 667.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved the proposal under sections 14, 15, and 16 of the Delhi Shops and Establishment Act, 1954, for 32 establishments to work on a 24x7x365 basis.

As per the official statement, of these, 7 approvals have been granted to establishments that had applied for exemption for their women employees during nighttime.

4 Tamil Nadu CM Stalin to inaugurate newly-built Madurai Jallikattu stadium

The newly-built Madurai Jallikattu stadium is all set to be inaugurated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on January 23.

The new Jallikattu stadium being built near Alanganallur in Madurai district, is named after former chief minister of the state and late DMK leader M Karunanidhi.

CM Stalin had earlier announced that a world-class Jallikattu stadium with a seating capacity of more than 5,000 people would be constructed in this village at an estimated cost of Rs.44 crores.

6 Maldives asks India to withdraw troops by March 15

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu has asked India to withdraw its troops from the island nation by March 15, a top official said on Sunday, posing the latest in a series of diplomatic challenges from Malé to New Delhi since his September election win.

Abdullah Nazim Ibrahim, the Principal Secretary to President Muizzu on Public Policy, told a media conference at the Presidential Palace in Malé that Indian military personnel will no longer be permitted to reside in the Maldives, and that the troops have been asked to leave by March 15, 2024, according to Malé-based media.

The senior official’s announcement was made even as the India-Maldives High Level Core Group — set up when the Maldivian President and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the UN climate summit in Dubai — held its first meeting, in Malé.

7 Army Day 2024

Every year on January 15, India celebrates its Army Day. The purpose of the day is to remember troops and all they have sacrificed for the country. Additionally, Army Day commemorates the year 1949, when Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of Independent India, succeeding General FRR Bucher, the last British-serving chief of the Indian Army.

From 1949 till 2022, the Army Day parade was organised at the Cariappa Parade Ground in the Delhi Cantonment. The Chief of Army Staff reviews the marching contingents who also take part in the Republic Day Parade every year.

The capital city of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, will host a spectacular parade today to commemorate the 76th Army Day of the Indian Army. For the second year in a row, the Army Day parade has been relocated outside of Delhi. The parade was held at the Parade Ground of the MED & Centre in Bengaluru the previous year.

8 Rural development Min signs pact with SBI to facilitate loans for SHGs

The Rural Development Ministry and State Bank of India on Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate enterprise financing for rural self-help groups (SHG), an official statement said.

The MoU was signed by Additional Secretary Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Rural Livelihoods Mission, Charanjit Singh and Chief General Manager, State Bank of India, Corporate office Mumbai, Shantanu Pendsey.

9 Rear Admiral Upal Kundu assumes charge as Chief of Staff at Southern Naval Command

Rear Admiral Upal Kundu has assumed charge as Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command (SNC).

An alumnus of the Indian Naval Academy, he was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1991. He is an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) specialist and commanded guided missile frigate INS Trikand, missile corvette INS Kuthar, erstwhile INS Akshay, and ashore units — INS Tanaji and INS Kadamba.

A graduate from the Defence Services Staff College (Wellington), he was also the Commodore, Bureau of Sailors. On promotion to flag rank, he assumed duties of Chief Staff Officer (Training) at the headquarters, SNC, prior to taking over as Chief of Staff, says a Navy release.

10 Assam’s Kaziranga National Park records 27% increase in waterbirds

The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, better known as the safest address of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, has recorded a 27% increase in the number of resident and winter migratory waterbirds.

The fifth waterbird census conducted through the citizen scientist initiative from January 9-10 across the 1,302 sq. km wildlife preserve revealed the presence of 84,839 birds, which was 18,063 more than the number recorded during a similar exercise in 2021-22.

This, park officials said, places Kaziranga among the top five habitats of waterbirds in the country.
