1 63rd Central Geological Programming Board Meeting to be held in Bhopal on 22nd January 2024

The 63rd Central Geological Programming Board (CGPB) meeting organized by Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines will be held on 22nd January 2024 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.

The meeting will be held under the Chairmanship of Shri V.L. Kantha Rao, Secretary, Govt. of India, Ministry of Mines. It will be attended by Shri Sanjay Lohiya, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Mines, Shri Janardan Prasad, Director General, GSI and other senior functionaries of different Ministries, State Directorates of Mining & Geology, PSUs, representatives from private mining industry, Mining associations and other stakeholders.

On this occasion, GSI will hand over the Report on Geological & Geotechnical investigation of Joshimath Township, Chamoli District, to Uttarakhand Govt. The Mineral Map of the newly carved out UT of Ladakh will also be released on this occasion along with other significant publication of GSI.

2 First meeting of the Social Audit Advisory Body (SAAB) held

The 1st meeting of the Social Audit Advisory Body (SAAB) was held on 18th January 2024 at conference hall, Dr Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. The Meeting was chaired by the Secretary, Department of Social Justice & Empowerment. This advisory body, a first of its kind, has been established to guide the Ministry in institutionalizing social audits for its various schemes.

Representatives from key ministries and academic institutions, including the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Department of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Women and Child Development, Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Ministry of Rural Development, National Institute of Rural Development, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Delhi School of Social Work and Indian Institute of Public Administration are members of this advisory body.

In Ladakh, the annual Ethnic Mamani Festival was organized at Historical Styangkung Village and Chiktan Shagaran.

The Steyangkung village is around 500 years old and still well-preserved till now and being developed as one of the well-maintained heritage villages in Ladakh.

The history of the celebration of Mamani Festival in Ladakh goes back to the ancient tradition of giving food to departed family members. During Mamani, people would exchange food with their relatives and neighbours and worship a variety of spirits (Lha). These Festivals have helped in the revival of more than 35 Cuisines of Kargil Ladakh.

The Mamani Festival is organised by Himalayan Cultural Heritage Foundation (HCHF) and Ladakh Tourism Department

4 Delhi discoms, UP's NPCL bag top ratings of power distribution companies

Four electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have bagged the coveted A+ rating in the latest Consumer Service Rating of Discoms (CSRD) report.

The report, unveiled by Power Minister RK Singh on Friday, tracks the performance of DISCOMs across the country and aims to improve their accountability towards consumers.

"Out of the 62 DISCOMs evaluated, Delhi emerged as the frontrunner, with three companies securing the top rating: BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL), " Office of union Minister RK Singh posted on X.

5 Odisha clears JSW's Rs 40,000 cr proposal to set up EV manufacturing units

The Odisha government on Monday approved 14 proposals including the JSW Group's plan to set up electric vehicles and component manufacturing units in Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts with an investment of Rs 40,000 crore, a senior official said.

The proposals were approved at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

"The Cabinet approved a special incentive package for the JSW Group's ambitious EV and component manufacturing projects at Naraj in Cuttack, and Paradip in Jagatsinghpur district", chief secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena told reporters.

These projects, with a combined investment of over Rs 40,000 crore and employment potential of over 11,000, are set to usher in a new era of industrial growth and job creation in the state, he said.

Recognizing the power of female empowerment, he also formed the Rani Jhansi Regiment, a battalion of courageous women fighters. Notably, it was Netaji who first bestowed upon Mahatma Gandhi the honourable title of “Father of the Nation.”

8 India Open: Tai Tzu Ying beats Olympic champ to win women's singles title

In the Olympic year, Chinese Taipei badminton legend Tai Tzu Ying overcame her Malaysian Open final loss by winning the India Open 2024 women’s singles title against reigning Olympic champion Chen Yu Fei of China in straight sets 21-16, 21-12 on Sunday, January 21.

Ying, who last competed at the India Open when it was the Super Series tournament in 2016, said that she was able to come back in the first set because of the support that she received from the audience present at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi.

“I was behind in the first set and with the audience support she was able to fight back,” said the 29-year-old while speaking at the mixed zone to the reporters after her match.

10 President of UN General Assembly Dennis Francis to pay 5-day visit to India

The President of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, is paying a 5-day visit to India beginning tomorrow to the 26th of January at the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. During Mr. Francis' visit, he is scheduled to engage in talks with the External Affairs Minister on critical multilateral issues of mutual interest. The discussions are expected to encompass a wide range of topics, including India’s call for comprehensive reforms within the United Nations, with a particular emphasis on the Security Council, aiming for increased equity and representation, especially for developing countries.
 
The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that Mr. Francis' visit to India presents a unique opportunity to strengthen India-UN ties, especially with the General Assembly, which is the most representative organ of the United Nations. The MEA said this visit will also be an opportunity to enhance India's collaboration with the United Nations on Indian priorities as well as the global challenges being faced by the Global South. The theme of his UNGA presidency is “Rebuilding trust and reigniting solidarity.
