1 Cinematographer Gangu Ramsay of iconic Ramsay Brothers dies at 83

Cinematographer-filmmaker Gangu Ramsay, one of the seven Ramsay Brothers known for cult horror films such as Purani Haveli and Tehkhana, died at a hospital in Mumbai on Sunday morning, his family said. He was 83.

According to the family, Gangu Ramsay had been battling health issues for the past month.

"With profound sadness, we announce the passing of one of the Ramsay Brothers, the legendary cinematographer, filmmaker, producer and the second eldest son of F.U. Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay. He departed from us early this morning at 8 am, at the age of 83, after battling health issues for the past month. He was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital," the family said in a statement.

2 King Charles III presented with first UK banknotes with his portraits

Britain’s King Charles III was on Tuesday presented with the first set of banknotes bearing his portrait by Bank of England representatives at Buckingham Palace in London.

The 75-year-old monarch, who has been undergoing cancer treatment, was pictured with Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and Chief Cashier and Executive Director of Banking Sarah John.

It is seen as a historic moment as it is the first time the Bank of England has changed the image of the British monarch on a banknote, as King Charles’ late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was the first monarch to appear on a Bank of England note in 1960.

3 USISPF appoints ex-revenue secy Tarun Bajaj as chair of US-India Tax Forum

The US-India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) has appointed former Revenue Secretary and ex-Secretary of Economic Affairs Tarun Bajaj as the head of the US-India Tax Forum.

Bajaj, 61, joined the USISPF as an advisor to the Board of Directors in January and will now spearhead the US-India Tax Forum, an official announcement said on Tuesday.

“With his extensive experience and profound expertise in finance and taxation, Tarun stands as an ideal candidate to steer our efforts forward. His adept leadership in shaping fiscal and tax policies and navigating intricate economic terrains will fortify our mission of nurturing strong economic bonds between the United States and India,” said Mukesh Aghi, president and CEO of USISPF.

4 'Planning for India's Urbanisation'; Book Launch by CEPT Press

CEPT University Press today launched 'Planning for India's Urbanisation' by Vidyadhar K. Phatak. The event was attended by practicing planners from the region and members of the CEPT community viz. students, faculty members, alumni, etc. Phatak is among the country's leading practitioners and thinkers in Urban Planning. The book is a collection of essays written over two decades, reflecting his experience of over fifty years in public service, in consulting and academia. Having spent a large part of his career in an operational position in the planning of Mumbai Metropolitan area, and subsequently, as a researcher and an academic, the essays carry comparative advantage of deeper insights.

The four main themes of the book include urbanization and its challenges, centrality of land in planning and financing of development, urban housing, and planning a metropolis. 5 Paytm Payments Bank's MD and CEO Surinder Chawla resigns

Paytm Payments Bank's Managing Director and CEO Surinder Chawla has offered to resign from his position, the company said in a stock exchange filing on April 8. As per the company, Chawla resigned citing personal reasons and to explore better career prospects. He will be relieved from PPBL on June 26, the company said.

“The company would like to update that it has been informed by its associate entity, Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) on April 8, 2024, at 5.23 pm, that Surinder Chawla, managing director and CEO of PPBL has tendered his resignation on April 8, 2024, on account of personal reasons and to explore better career prospects,” One97 Communication, the owner of Paytm, said in a BSE filing on Tuesday.

The company further stated that nearly all agreements between the company and PPBL have been terminated as per our disclosure on March 1, 2024, and the board of PPBL has been reconstituted with five independent directors including an Independent Chairperson, and no nominees from the Company, as per the company's disclosure on February 26, 2024.

6 Historic moment: BSE-listed firms' m-cap hits Rs 400 lakh crore for first time ever

The market capitalisation of all listed companies on BSE crossed Rs 400 lakh crore for the first time to hit a lifetime high on April 8, 2024, with continued rally in blue-chip, mid-cap and small-cap indices.

BSE had achieved a market capitalisation of Rs 100 lakh crore first time in March 2014, followed by Rs 200 lakh crore in February 2021. It reached Rs 300 lakh crore milestone in July 2023, and now Rs 400 lakh crore just nine months later.

Since April 2023, BSE listed firms collectively gained Rs 145 trillion in market capitalisation, marking a 57% surge. This growth was fueled by improved high-frequency indicators, strong corporate earnings, positive investor sentiment due to stable policies, and significant domestic and international inflows. Mid and Small Cap indices saw a surge of 60% and 63% respectively, outpacing the 28.6% rise in the Largecap Sensex index. Leading sectors include Realty, PSU banks, Auto, Energy, Infra, and Pharma.

9 IIT Jodhpur researchers develop sensor to track disease progression, provide rapid medical support

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Jodhpur have developed a nanosensor that helps in the quick detection of cytokines, a group of proteins that regulate various cells.

"This development aims to reduce the mortality rate occurring due to delayed diagnosis and a lack of early warnings. Moreover, the technology has immense potential to be used as a rapid and point-of-care technique for health monitoring, disease diagnosis, prognosis, and immune response tracking," reads statement from IIT Jodhpur.

Cytokines are one of the many biomarkers of inflammation that are used for diagnosing diseases and tracking their progression.

10 IPL 2024: Virat Kohli hits record eighth century in franchise cricket

Virat Kohli extended his record of most centuries in Indian Premier League (IPL) history as he smashed his eighth hundred and first of this season against the Rajasthan Royals on Saturday, April 6 at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur.

He now has a two-century lead against Chris Gayle, who has six centuries in IPL history. Virat has been part of the IPL ever since its start in 2008.

Virat Kohli leads the chart of most centuries in IPL cricket with his eight tons now. Behind him is Gayle who has hit six IPLP centuries while Jos Buttler, who is also playing in this game and currently batting at 43 in the chase of 184. He has five centuries. KL Rahul, Shane Watson and David Warner have all hit four centuries in the richest league in cricket.
